Devotional A CANDLE...IN WATER?!

Last year, I remember looking at Deeper Pond, from Main Bridge towards the Irrigation Ditch, and seeing a strange thing in the water. A CANDLE! What was a candle doing in the water? My eyes had to be playing tricks on me. But the harder I stared, the more clearly I could see the candle. I got out my camera to take a picture of it, so I would know it wasn’t just a figment of my imagination. But when I looked at what I’d taken, sure enough, it was still there! But scientifically, it would make sense that a rod of small wax could be floating in water. But it was still glowing red! Candles don’t keep doing that in the water…at least, they’re not supposed to, are they?

I looked at that photo again and again at home, and while toying with the contrast and lighting of the photo realized what had happened. The “candle” was actually the curled underside of a water lily leaf reflecting the sunlight and looking like a wax rod. The “flame”? A pond carp swimming nearby!

It is true that fire is not supposed to burn in water. But isn’t there a verse about how God causes a light to shine out of darkness? That happened when Jesus came into this putrid, sin-festered earth—the antithesis of all God is—which couldn’t snuff out the flame. He revived after 3 days and kept glowing, giving new life.

I know. I’m getting carried away. I went back to that pond, and that carp is just a carp, that leaf is just a leaf. I’m just me.
