THE BACKUP SQUAD DAVID FORMED FOR SAUL (I Sam. 22, 24)

"And every one who was in distress, and every one who was in debt, and every one who was discontented, gathered themselves unto him, and he became a captain over them; and there were with him about four hundred men." (I Sam. 22:2)

"I will not put forth mine hand against my lord; for he is the LORD's anointed." (I Sam. 24:10)

All the disgruntled, restless men that gathered around David expected him to lead them in revolt. But as far as David was concerned Saul was God's anointed, and as long as Saul was alive, David would be a loyal subject --because he was God's and not his own person. David's men were led to understand because the King was God's anointed, no matter what, they too would be his subjects!

What pastor would not want prayer support like that?

Well, I suppose the proud leader would say, "What? I want people to think I am worthy of supporting!" It would be the difference between Peter before and after breaking. Anyone who realizes he is the "least of all saints" rejoices in backing, in unconditional backup, because he is so aware of his own weakness.

* In holding together this band and keeping them from an uprising, David may've helped steer their heart-eyes onto the lovingkindness and goodness of YAHWEH GOD. May we ever keep our hearts set on HIM.
